Chindōgu

Japanese "un-useless" inventions that are designed to solve a real problem but are also impractical, humorous, or create a larger 

problem than they solve. Rules involve:

  • It must exist: A working prototype must be built.
  • It must solve a problem: It is created to address a real, everyday issue.
  • It must be nearly useless: The "solution" creates more problems than it solves, making it impractical.
  • It is innocent: It cannot be vulgar or disrespectful.
  • It is not for sale: It must remain in the public domain and cannot be patented or sold.
  • Humor is a byproduct: The humor comes from the impracticality, not from being a joke itself.
  • It is not propaganda: It's not a statement for a cause or philosophy.
  • It is not taboo: It cannot be vulgar, sexually suggestive, or sick.
  • It is not a money-making item: It is a gift to the world, not a commercial product.
  • It is without prejudice
